I try to keep my pockets empty so as not ruin my "silhouette." I do, however, always carry a pocket handkerchief and am obsessed with finding vintage-but-new hand-rolled linen handkerchiefs, which are few and far between. Ok, so here’s a preliminary list of books I love to read and love to teach. They are from the 17th-20th centuries. I could easily quadruple it, so let me know what you’re interested in and what kind of things you like to read and I’d be happy to provide more suggestions. By the way, although I know that these are all translated into English, I translated the titles myself. They might actually be published under another name in English. Molière: The Tartuffe—an hysterical play about a religious hypocrite. So relevant today. Laclos: Dangerous Liaisons—an epistolary novel that is way better than the movie, which was pretty good. Flaubert: Madame Bovary—“She wanted to die, but she also wanted to go to Paris.” Maupassant: Butterball (Boule de suif)—a too cruel novella about the mistreatment of a plump woman with supposedly loose morals. Contains one of my favorite French words: “quenottes” which is something like “little doll teeth.” Zola: The Slaughterhouse (L’Assomoir): Social realist novel that makes you want to commit suicide. Gide: The Counterfeiters—a trippy novel that provides its own metacommentary. Includes strange young boy who speaks in weird language and dies an unfortunate death. So fun! Proust: Of course. (I’d recommend “Sodom and Gomorrah.”) Jarry: Ubu the King—a crazy play about a totalitarian, robot-like, obese buffoon. Caused riots when it debuted in Paris. The author talked like an automaton, always wore cycling costumes, and like to shoot at things for fun. Yourcenar: Memoires of Hadrien—a hard read, but one of the most beautiful, philosophical, sensual books ever written. The first-person account of 1st-century Roman Emperor Hadrien as he looks back over his life and prepares to die. The middle section (“Sacred Heart”) makes me cry. Genet: Querelle of Brest or The Blacks: The first is a novel that Fassbinder made into a weird movie about a murderous sailor with a strange doppelganger. The latter a play about race and identity that is still one of the smartest things I’ve read. LeDuc: Therese and Isabelle (get the unexpurgated edition): the story of a same-sex love affair between two girls in a Catholic school. Still shocking today, in part because of the author’s depiction of the female body. Perec: Life: A user’s guide—An amazing “postmodern” novel about a fictional block in Paris. Will blow your mind with its interwoven stories. Guibert: To the Friend Who Did Not Save My Life—the autofictional account of an author with AIDS.
