Thanks for all the comments over the last 4 months.

I'll still be posting on flickr and posting on 'our' splendid new message board, so lets stay in touch eh?

I don't plan on doing anything with this beard either, so I guess we'll just keep growing.

... For the Whiskerino tho' - fare thee well Beards, see you in 2009.

Of Sleuth Wood in the lake,
There lies a leafy island

There we've hid our faery vats,
Full of berrys
And of reddest stolen cherries.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the *wild*
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.

No wonder my bag is so heavy.

This lot is carried around in a much loved Timbuk2 courier bag that has been to hell and back and is still almost as good as the day I bought it.

My work bag is set up in a very similar way, except it's a MAP76, not the MAP76c, and I also carry my Ipaq, and a pile of flash-memory sticks - another phone, more dump pouches, cables, work papers ...

I'm only thankful I didn't have to empty my rucksac, or my canoe bags, or my camera rigging, or eek! - the truck.

This was really very hard, there is about 100 thousand things I've left out here, but as the barest hint of a taster, and in picture order, going sunwise we have:

# Erkan Ogur/Djivan Gasperyan - Faud.
# The Tallis Scholars - Thomas Tallis - Spem in alium.
# Diamanda Galas - Defixiones, Will and Testament.
# GY!BE - F#A#00.
# Sigur Ros - Heima (which Ophelia is standing on).
# Om - Pilgrimage.
# The Tallis Scholars - Allegri - Miserere.
# Palace Brothers - There is no one ...
# Giya Kancheli - Lament.
# ASMZ - 'Shafts of light' ...
# John Parish and Polly Jean Harvey - dance hall at louse point.
# Arvo Part - Kanon Pokajanen.
# Cowboy Junkies - Caution Horses.
# John Taverner - The protecting veil (Steven Isserlis).

People/things that should have been here but weren't- Nick Cave, Emmylou Harris, Sandy Denny, Samuel Barber, Johnny Cash, Sparklehorse, Mogwai, Red Sparrowes, EITS, Ween, Afghan Whigs, Alexander Knaifel, any amount of early Medieval music from the troubadours in the south to the recitals of the Edda's in the north, Sufi devotional songs, Raga's, and that's just the start of it ....

I had wondered if it would ever end ...

I've spent most of the day half-in and half-out of the truck rewiring the lighting. We've had a chilly damp-laden easterly wind, and trying to solder and get heatshrink on anything in that, was as the 12 trials of Heracles (or so it felt at the time).

I know you'll have got it, but yesterdays caption was about the Ravens of Odin:
Hugin, who is thought, and Munin, who is memory.

The whole world wide, every day,
fly Hugin and Munin;
I worry lest Hugin should fall in flight,
yet more I fear for Munin.

Quite so!

I'll tell a little cat story now, but it's also about love I guess - so feel free to bail out if you want to.

Now for sure I'll guarantee there are plenty of people who feel that there are more 'worthy' ideals, or that there are bigger things to be concerned about, and yeah, that's all fine - but thinking like that ain't my business.

Here's the story:

12 months ago to the day, my beautiful, beloved, and very much-missed ginger queen made Her Great Journey.

She had an inoperable tumor in her face that we had been 'treating' since the previous Samhain, but she woke me up just before dawn on the 7th of Feb 2007, constantly pawing at it, and when I took a look, I knew that it had started to spread and damage her internally, and as soon as it was hurting I'd promised Her I'd help Her to travel on.

I phoned the vet who came out to our house and with our hearts breaking, by mid-morning, She had gone on ahead. The big tom had stayed in all morning to be with Her and I. I know he gave her his love for the journey, and said his own farewells. He's an expressive fellow, and he was clearly as upset as I was.

I found some early spring flowers to travel with Her, and from there She was cremated.

She'd been with me since six weeks old, and She died just before her fifteenth birthday. She was a very fit kitty, and would have otherwise looked forward to a ripe old age, but it wasn't to be. We never saw this end coming, so love them while they are here.

... and then three weeks later the pregnant tabby queen arrived, squirted out the kitties and it's been bonkers ever since.

So, the reflection is on love.

A shared, simple, honest, unconditional love. Free from judgment, free from desire. I think often and fondly about my ginger Queen, and I know that the tom does too.

The kitties were conceived after Her passing, but I've told them stories about their 'grandmother'.

They love, I love, we are all happy.

... and depending on your perspective, that's either a load of self-indulgent sentimental rambling on, or it'll have struck a chord. If it's not a cat, (or cats), it'll be a (or more) dog / horse / child / turtle / tree / religion whatever ...

Typically I've been working inside all day today fixing broken code and balancing spreadsheets, so I couldn't use it out and about at work either.

It is my first - I don't plan on changing anytime soon either - more certainly, but nothing about replacement. I'm now also wondering vaguely about a 110 hi-cap pickup to for use for hauling timber. The 90 is a useful size off-road, way more nimble that this, but I think I'd miss the load-bearing capacity.

Blastro - I found that keeping my coat, gloves n' my scarf on outside tonight did make a huge difference.

I'll tell you how it might have - we had a beautifully coloured sky here as the sun set tonight - it all hung there, right on the edge of the land for what seemed like a lifetime, poised between day and night - the sky slowly darkening, but still coloured, even as the sun slid into the western moorland. More colours than I can even begin to count, the colours blending in so perfectly that no person alive could say where one ended and the next began - it wasn't even like that, the colours just became other colours.

... and my camera was at home - 20 minutes away - so the picture was lost either way - but at least I stayed and watched it.

So, here's pretty much about the worst ever picture of anyone jumping everâ„¢. Taken on timer, and almost out of the range of the flash.

Ok, keen movie goers will notice some key differences between this and the original. Here's a few.

#1. The original is in daylight, in the backcountry.
#2. The original features a kinda averages car, not a truck with a roofrack.
#3. The original is wearing a blue jacket.
#4. The original has a moderator fitted to his 9mm.
#5. My hair is shorter.

I have to say that I hesitated for ages about posting this one, because of the connotations - it kinda felt like crossing a line here, but I see that GFMorris has already beaten me to it today, plus I love this film and really did want to tribute it.

Hope that's ok ...

It's a bit like your favorite pencil - you love it, so you use it, but each time you use it, you take a bit off it's life ... kinda sad in a way I guess, but better that and it have a good honest life, than consigned to a store somewhere - plus it is only a tshirt (or a pencil). Sparhook.

This is a traditional tool, used for making spars (err, perhaps not surprisingly). Spars are split boughs (usually of Hazel) and used like a ... kinda big staple to hold bundles of thatch together in traditional English thatched roofing. They are also useful tools in splitting withies for wattle and daub buildings, and in basket making.

This particular pattern is a 'Somerset' pattern hook - being a bit more 'open' on the end. Similar to the classic English woodland tool, the billhook, but smaller and slimmer, for lighter duties.

This and the billhook are localised tools for particular types of woodlands, and thus have parallels with tools like like machetes, parangs and khukri (each one being best suited to it's own particular type of environment).

I use it a little bit for hedging (although that's the billhook's natural environment as it's extra heft makes lighter work of the laying), and for preparing willow for basketry, it's also ideal for chopping and splitting wood for little fires when I'm out and about.

Antex CS18 soldering-iron.

Fixed 18w iron, this one is fitted with an Antex B110660 tip for fine work. Nice size iron, copes with a decent range of connectors, from RCA and 1/4 jack-plugs, down to the little 2.5mm jack-plugs, LEDs and even some PCB work. Struggles a bit clearing some older installations, particularly on bigger N-type plugs or PL259 sized stuff, of it's it's old and globby, and when used out of doors, but as a general maintenance iron for most jobs it's good.

A solder-station would be a better choice if you do a lot of soldering on a workbench, but this one partnered with a little 10w for very fine work, and maybe something bigger too for field work is fine.

Making your own cables is an easy and useful thing to get to grips with - it's a million times more cost effective, plus you can roll out some nice custom stuff to fit your installation exactly how you want it.

Ideal for use in rewiring your car, checking for current leakages, and for tracing continuity (or otherwise) in cables and fuses. This one will also check the status of common transistors, capacitors and the like, and all for the price of a DIY store battery-tester (which this will do as well of course).
