#5 (Best Multiplayer) - Halo 3, Xbox 360

It's sad, really. Based on the enormous success of the rest of the Halo series, 3 should have easily been the game of the year. The biggest problem? There isn't THAT much that Bungie could do to improve Halo without risking a LOT. So Bungie gave us a Halo 1/2 hybrid with a few new weapons and equipment, amazing customization, a solid map lineup, a beautiful double-rendered graphic system, and a new map editing feature...but at its core, Halo 3 is still Halo. So to many, it simply seemed like Halo 2.5.

The problem is that the major change that occurred between 1 and 2 was the addition of Xbox Live. Sure there were other changes, but these were overshadowed by the online multiplayer, which was excellent. It's even better in 3, but the problem is that, even with, by technical standards, almost unbelievable graphics, gameplay, customization, and countless tiny improvements, it comes off as the same old multiplayer-heavy title.

Which means that, while no (or very few) reviewers gave it less than excellent reviews, it is in no way a contender for the major awards given out each year, because it's simply not original enough.

Which makes me sad, because although Halo seems a little cliche, and the overly prideful gamers attempting to be "cool" by negativity claim to despise it, it's still really fun. Everything that made Halo 1 and 2 good are here, and more.

So while it will be overlooked for most awards, I give it best multiplayer. It's extensive customization and options for split-screen, system link, and online play make this good alone, but add to that the new multiplayer-enabled Forge map editor and the new saved films and screenshots features, along with the community file-share structure, and Halo has the potential to be the greatest multiplayer experience an FPS could hope to deliver.

Beautiful job, Bungie. Well done.

This game really got unfair reviews, I think.

It was knocked for repetition, mostly. Which is funny, since most games are, by nature, rather repetitive.

When one tries to hurry and rush through Assassin's Creed, yes, it's becomes PAINFULLY repetitious and slow-paced. But if you don't have a deadline to finish it by, I highly recommend stepping back and admiring the detail of models, textures, artwork, and ESPECIALLY animations that went into this amazing work of gaming art, and the repetition will melt as you try to be as Assassin-like as possible. As a game that's both open and linear, the level of freedom is perfect while at the same time allowing for a decent story.

But the greatest part of the game is the end, which isn't really an end at all. Oh sure, it's an end to the storyline within a storyline, but it appears to be just the beginning for our true protagonist Desmond.

Here's hoping for Assassin's Creed 2!

Straight off the heels of Call of Duty 2, this is the third installment, Call of Duty 4!

Background on that, after Call of Duty 2, Activision decided that they wanted to release a Call of Duty game every year. Developer Infinity Ward considered this an impossibility. Rather than simply improving on the last model, Infinity Ward wanted to recreate the next game from the ground up (again), and also to leave behind the generic WWII shooter idea and move to something bigger and better, i.e. Modern Warfare. So Activision, being the bastards that they are, shunted the project, brain child of Infinity Ward, off to developer Treyarch, to make the 3rd game in the series in the year between 2 and 4. 3 sucked when compared to 2, and obviously compared to 4.

And so, the end credit music in what is easily the best shooter of 2007 expresses the frustration of developer Infinity Ward in the body of a rap song, which repeatedly verifies that "this is the third installment, Infinity Ward shit!"

An excellent game. I have beaten it completely once, most of the way a second time, and am playing through on Veteran, not to mention the extensive online play with a beautiful perk system for customization and class creation.

As X-Play would say: A five, out of five.
