Tribute to Scrivener, The Bearded Strangler. I have no idea how to get the lighting to work like he did. He's a much better photographer than me. But I think I make for a more convincing strangler. Those gloves did not fit.

This is not my favorite Hot Water Music album but there is a lyric in the first song that seems appropriate: "It never matter who you were or where you worked. It never mattered who you were or what you earned. What mattered was what you gave and what you loved." I thought the title "No Divison" seemed relevant as well.

Despite owning the largest Timbuk2 bag that the company makes and carrying it to and from work everyday, there is almost nothing in it. If you must know, I have some pens, my work phone, some headphones, an external hard drive, my camera, some business cards, a moleskin and some random cables (Cisco console cable as well as instrument cables) in there on a regular basis. This might seem like a lot but all of it goes in the inside pocket. The main cargo area is capable of holding six inflated soccer balls (fact) but in my case just usually just holds my coat or my gym clothes or (rarely) my work notebook if I need to take it home. It is damned handy to be able to carry something bulky in a bag though, it is infinitely helpful if I had a small box or something and still need two hands. I also throw all of my small gear in there if I have a gig.

It is mostly healed, but looking more and more unfinished as it does so. Since this is my first tattoo experience and since I tend to worry a lot, I keep assuming I did something wrong in the healing process, but I really didn't. March 11th can come soon enough, though. I can't wait to see it finished.

This picture really says it all. Kim puts up with my baloney on a regular basis. She is the best thing that has ever happened to me, it sometimes seems like she is the only good thing that has happened to me in the last four years. She makes me want to be a better person by reminding me that there are things in the world I care about that I don't spend time thinking often enough about. She has integrity, principles, and an incredible sense of honor. She is the most generous person I know and has no respect for bad tippers. Kim seems to remember everything she reads and she reads every day. She retains all of her high school French, she can decorate a cake with a ziploc bag better than anyone I have ever seen. She's terrified of butterflies and craters and she hates it when I tell people this. While Kim lacks my loudmouthed nature, she seems to get angry about the same things I do. We rant for hours about just about anything until we feel we are experts on the subject at hand. She isn't just the girl I have fallen in love with, but she is also my best friend. It's me and her, against everyone else. "Same team."

Earl Van Dyke - The Earl of Funk This is really the only release made by the Motown studio band, The Funk Brothers, as a featured act (while they were still active, anyway). This is a reissue that I bought for 8 bucks with a gift certificate Kim gave me for Christmas. This record SMOKES! It's along the same lines of King Curtis - Live At The Fillmore, if you are familiar with that kind of early instrumental R&B sound, but this is way better. Highlights: The Funk Brothers cover "Cissy Strut" and it sounds nothing like the Meters. It's as if James Jamerson had never heard the original bass line or thought he could do better (and I hate to say it, but he does).

Sometime in 1998 I was attending my first lesson with Whit Browne. I picked Whit as my teacher after an incredibly embarrassing placement audition. Whit was actually one of the professors that auditioned me, and I won't say I was totally horrible, I just didn't know what was expected of me. They said, "let's play a blues" and I played a blues shuffle (a la Freddie King), when what they meant was "play a 'jazz blues' " (a la Oscar Peterson). I fell flat on my face and took the first great shot to my ego of the many that I would receive in college. Later on, I'm in my first lesson and I'm bright-eyed and excited to be there. I'm nervous as hell. It only takes you a few moments to realize that Whit is exceptionally easy to get along with, but he can come off like a Drill-Sergeant on first impression. Anyway, Whit tells me to get set up while he finishes writing something in his lesson plan. I get my bass out and I plug into this little Fender combo amp he has in his room and I notice the treble knob is missing and cranked almost all the way up. I make a conscious effort to not fiddle with the knobs, I guess, because, I'd heard somewhere that it was rude to mess with someone else's amp, but I'd never had the experience because I was always the only bass player back home. So I start noodling around a little and he jumps up out of his chair and starts yelling at me "That don't sound like no bass to me, man! Turn that treble down, that's why I took the knob off!" And he proceeds to lecture me about how "the bass goes boom boom boom" and "they hear ya before they hear ya!" and probably introduced a few of his many famous sayings which didn't make any sense at the time. I remember trying to explain that I didn't turn it up, that it was like that already, but he didn't buy it. To this day I'm not sure if he turned that knob up just to mess with me. It wouldn't surprise me if he did. So we start talking about music, my favorite bass players, what kind of stuff I am into, what I know and what I don't know. At some point there is this exchange: "Do you play Jazz?" "Not really. I like Jazz, but I don't have much experience with it." "If you don't mind me asking, why did you choose me to be your teacher?" "Well you seemed kind of tough at the audition, and I need someone to kick me in the ass." "Well I can do that, but I'm known here as one of the Jazz guys. ...you don't play Jazz?" "No." "Do you like Jazz?" "Yeah I like it, I don't really know much about it." "Well this is a Jazz school. When in Rome you have to make the like the Romans. Have you ever heard of Ray Brown?" "I've heard the name, but I've never listened to him." "Well, there's not much we can do this week. If you've never heard Jazz I can't teach you to play it." "..." "Your first assignment is to go buy a Ray Brown CD, listen to it every day. You need to get the sound in your head." "Which CD should I buy?" "It doesn't matter. You don't know what the hell you're listening to anyway." And that was the end of the lesson! I hung my head in embarassment and I walked down Boylston to Tower Records on Mass. Ave and I bought Ray Brown - "Something For Lester" (1978, Contemporary Records). This is still one of my favorite Jazz albums. At the time I remember that I looked at the cover of the CD and I saw Elvin Jones' name-- I'd never heard him-- but I'd heard my drummer friends talk so passionately about him. I had no idea who Cedar Walton was but I figured he must be good if he was playing with these other two guys that I'd heard so many great things about. Ignorance. Bliss. That seems like forever ago now. I've bought hundreds of CD's since then based on "informed" decisions and I haven't been nearly as pleased with them as I still am with this one. Highlights for me: Ray taking the melodies on "Georgia on My Mind" and "Sister Sadie." Elvin and Ray jamming over the intro of the first track "Ojos De Rojo," I wasn't sure if drums were supposed to sound that way or not.. I'd never heard anything like it before. Ray's solo on "Slippery" makes me smile involountarily.

My Ryan Hale Carepackage. I had tried to set up a shot where I was wearing this shemagh (arab head scarf) that Kim got me, and I was going to look like a terrorist asking for more money and pop rocks, but it would have killed the moment and also the picture didn't turn out that well. Ryan texted me yesterday to say my "Pandora's Box" would arrive today. Indeed it is a Pandora's Box.... of emotions.

James Jamerson Tattoo, Phase 1 A long time ago I saw this image in a book called "How The Fender Bass Changed The World" by Jim Roberts and I might have even commented then about how it would make a cool tattoo. I loved the idea of James Jamerson being viewed as a Saint. If you were to think of the electric bass as kind of a cult or American Music as kind of a religion, Jamerson would be a revered figure either way. After I saw Scrivener's typewriter phoenix and I learned the story behind it, I knew that I needed a similar permanent reminder in my life. A right of passage, a reminder of who I am-- because the older I get the more confused I get about myself. The idea of this saintly Jamerson illustration kept floating back into focus. Not just because I am a huge fan of Motown and because I am a bass player, but because I wanted throw a part of myself into music the way some do with religion, which is something I think I did unknowingly as a teenager, before I went to college for music. I wanted to ask music to give me a shot at happiness. I wanted to remind myself that I used to believe that music would save my life. I needed to feel like maybe it still can. I don't know if a tattoo, in itself, can do that. But I felt like I needed a permanent reminder of the life-long commitment I once made and how that commitment is just as indelible as this tattoo. January 28th, 2008 was, in many ways the worst day I have had in a long time. My student loan situation is beyond manageability. I scheduled this tattoo weeks ago, and part of me just wanted to cancel the appointment and go home and sleep. It is now January 29th, 2008 and Jamerson would have been 70 today if he were still alive. I am turning 29 on the same day. James would have already made history at my age, but he would also have 16 years left of his life. Jamerson could not change with the times, he could not adapt when Motown left Detroit and he was plagued by personal demons that eventually killed him in the form of alcoholism. I sometimes think I might be fighting off my own demons. Not drugs and alcohol, but far more subtle and devious demons. I guess its kind of crazy, but I kind of feel like a reminder of Jamerson's life could help me to stay on the right path. So after having the shittiest day ever. I walked into Fuzion Ink and the Temptations were playing. No joke. I have to go back to get the coloring finished, but I am happy so far with how its turning out.

11/01/2005 "A 38-year-old homeless man was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries this morning after someone set him on fire, police said. A security guard making his rounds on the 200 block of Beale Street in the Financial District came across the man engulfed in flames around 4 a.m., said San Francisco police Sgt. Neville Gittens. The guard said the man was walking around in circles and asked him if he had called 911. Police believe the man did not set fire to himself and are investigating the incident as an attempted murder. No one was in custody this morning. Police are looking for another man who apparently was burning as well. Gittens said that man could be a victim or a suspect, and he did not know whether he was homeless. The 38-year-old is being treated at the burn center of St. Francis Memorial Hospital."
