Today's theme was a tough one to narrow down. I decided to go the route of exploration and discovery through the years. These are a few albums that have influenced or shaped me in one way or another – their common thread being that they opened my eyes to something outside of what I knew musically. Nirvana - In Utero: My cousin Kory (who introduced me to pretty much everything here) gave my brother this cassette when I was 9. Prior to this I had been lip-synching Garth Brooks with a tennis racket in the garage. Thank God for this album.. My mom took it away and hid it in her sock drawer because of the song 'Rape Me'. Down - NOLA: This is actually a stand-in because I couldn't find Pantera's Vulgar Display of Power. I found the Pantera cd behind the high school weight room after little league baseball practice. My first experience with heavy music. DJ Shadow - Endtroducing: This album blew my mind. At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command: I have no words. Best ever. Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come: I was actually a real late bloomer on the refused, but eventually I realized that a lot of the bands i liked were just poor imitations of them. subseven - The EP: I joined this band the summer I turned 18, and the next winter I dropped out of college, singed a scary record contract, and drove around the country in an '85 ford van named Hector playing rock and roll. We released this EP and a full-length called 'Free to Conquer' on Flicker Records. Road weary and ready to get hitched, I left the band in the summer of 2005, and they played their final show that winter. It feels like a lifetime since those days. One member lives a couple of blocks from me, one in Dallas, one (el clinto) in Michigan, and Reed, our bassist, died of a heart attack at age 33 this past November. I owe a lot to this band. Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison: My Grandpa's music finally started to make sense to me... Pedro the Lion - Achilles Heel: Ace's photo today pretty much nails what I love about David Bazan. Sigur Ròs - ( ): There's just something in the Icelandic water... Wilco - A Ghost Is Born: I'd dabbled in Wilco before, but the first listen to 'At Least That's What You Said' was a near-religious experience. I'm seeing them for the first time next month. I'm excited. So there it is.
