Like many of you, my musical taste is varied. However, in keeping with the spirit of theme days (which I rarely seem to get to participate in), I pick this one. The Grifters : Crappin' You Negative (1994) The first time I saw the Grifters perform was in Shreveport, Louisiana at a place called Geoff's Building. The short boring version is that Geoff's mom owned a stained glass shop and let KSCL (Centenary College radio) book shows in the tiny, 600 square foot storage room in the back. Some other firsts for me at Geoff's include Sunny Day Real Estate, Rein Sanction, The Supersuckers, The Habitual Sex Offenders, Guided By Voices and countless others that made me the anti radio snob I am today. But the Grifters - there was something bizarre and awkward about them. These guys were older, somehow wiser and just wanted to rock - and you could tell. They made sounds with their instruments that Jonny Greenwood couldn't figure out, but made them in a way that brought together this strange southern indie blues that I had never heard before. Right away, I introduced myself, bought a copy of their latest CD and a t-shirt and hurried home with my dear friends Steve and Bryan (vocals and guitars for the band I was drumming for at the time) to take have a listen of our new found treasure, One Sock Missing by our new rock heroes the Grifters. Recorded on a 4 track that no one seemed to really know how to use, I was immediately dumbfounded and almost blew this album off as that oh so hip, low fi bullshit everyone was getting into. Me, I like fidelity - and this was not it. However, we listened all the way through - and then again, and before I knew it - I was in love Over the next few months, the Grifters became quite the Shreveport staple and were playing quite a bit. Of course, Steve somehow came into their good graces and we (The Roadside Monuments) ended up playing several shows with them. Not only did the guys never fail to amaze on stage, they were so humble and down to earth, they made your mom look like a snob. Then came the new album, Crappin' You Negative. This album made me slap myself for thinking these guys were lo fi. They were definitely not - they were just doing what they could do. And this time they created a monster. From the start of "Rats" into "Skin Man Palace" flying through "Get Outta That Spaceship & Fight Like A Man" closing with "Cinnamon", I almost crushed myself I was so bent over with delight. What the Grifters did with Crappin' You Negative is show me that the music you make is yours. There is no need to deviate from any notion you have because it is your soul that's on the line. Do what you want to do and believe in it or go home. It's that simple. They proved this time and time again as they turned down several huge record deals in favor of recording in a flower shop and staying in Memphis, simply because they were doing exactly what they wanted to do and didn't need anyone to muck it up.
