Goodbye Whiskerino. yes, in its most simple form it is merely a beard growing contest, but it has become so much more than that to me. and while i knew from the very start that i could make it to the last day, it is the journey here that is really what matters, not the end result. (although dont get me wrong. i love my beard.) coming into this thing knowing absolutely nobody, never would i have imagined that i would craft such friendships by merely uploading a photo and chatting through comments and on the talkback. i got to know some awesome people through whiskerino and can now say that i have over 200 new bearded friends. and while i became the stereotype of the asian dumpster diving red plaid flannel clothed googly eyes on chin wearing bearded guy, a lot of you got to know me as a lot more than just that, which means a lot to me. awesome people are hard to come by nowadays, and whiskerino is chock full of them. i can only hope that we all put an effort into continuing to be friends even after the beard. the beard has brought us together, and even with or without it, our brotherhood and community will not be separated. the past four months will be something that i will never forget and will tell stories about for ages to come. thank you all for being a part of this with me. the facial hair population of nashville is incredible. so first off, i dont really look like any celebrity. i mean, look at me people. so rather than try to look like someone im not, i decided to show all of you my own celebrity. or at least the things that make me almost famous, like the movie! im actually a triple threat celebrity: music, movies and literature. 1. on the left, the cd: "Brother, Sister" by mewithoutYou my first bit of true stardom occurs on this cd. my very own hands can be heard here clapping on tracks #2 and #7. and although my name is not specifically mention in the thank yous, in the cd jacket i am vicariously mentioned as one of the ventura/san luis friends (thats the name of the area where im from) 2. on the right, the book: True Vol. 2 by Irene Dunlap, co-author of Chicken Soup for the Soul for this book, the author found out about my life story and i was interviewed for a short biography about my life and how i came to know the Lord Jesus Christ. The chapter is entitled "Different" and this book is in print and can be found at most major Christian bookstores. the best thing about this was that i got paid money for just telling my life story over the phone. 3. in the upper right corner, the music: ad poster from my choirs performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City a few years ago, i was a part of an award winning choir in my hometown that was recognized as being one of the best in the nation. so much so we were invited to sing at carnegie hall for a special concert of Mozart's Requiem dedicated to the memory of martin luther king jr. i know it sounds silly, but when you were in a choir as good as mine was, even Carnegie Hall didnt seem that intimidating. but i guess it was more because i kinda got used to singin for a livin day in and day out. and for those of you who questioned my singing ability, heres some proof that i wasnt lying. 4. and all in the background, the movie: I Know Who Killed Me starring Lindsay Lohan shot in my hometown last year, this movie is probably one of the worst movies i have EVER seen... and im glad i got to be a part of it. i was a paid extra on the set of the film and was actually in a scene with Lindsay (the director liked how i looked), although the shot i was in didnt make it past the cutting room floor. i can still be seen in background on one shot though. really all of these things were kinda stupid for me to mention at all, but they are funny moments in my life where i had achieved stardom somewhat and i thought i should share them with you guys. besides, how many of you can say you were in a terrible lindsay lohan movie where she plays a stripper with amnesia? thats what i thought... sorry for the lack of creativity, but i have a plane to nashville to catch!]]> Sun, 17 Feb 2008 00:12:38 -0800 http://www.whiskerino.org/2007/ace/18499/ http://www.whiskerino.org/2007/ace/18393/

since today is technically the last non-themed day of whiskerino before the throwdown, i wanted to show all of you one of my favorite spots to photograph over the years: a grove of trees that have grown into the shape of a heart. whether intentionally planted in such a way or unintentionally grown in the shape by mother nature i am not sure, but its still quite a sight to behold in person especially when you see it driving down the highway. but since i first saw it years ago, a winery has now bought the land and started a vineyard, luckily choosing to grow around the heart than tearing it down. i hadnt been there in a while, so you can imagine my disappointment when i arrived to find that they have also decided to put up this very large ugly wire fence to keep me from getting a good shot of it anymore. i found it ironic that this most natural statement of love was preserved in all of its beauty for me to appreciate, yet i am confined to seeing it only from afar. so like any good photographer, i used the fence to my advantage and took this shot which i really like. i suppose in the most artsy of interpretations, this photo represents a wanting of that kind of love that is so awesome that it would spur this kind of creation but being held back from it in so many ways, as seen by the barbed wire fence. this is probably the most artistic shot ive ever taken for whiskerino, and although i do like it, i never did these kind of shots before because my purpose on here was more for the beard growing than the photo aspect of it. whiskerino has been one of the best things ive done in a long time and i thank you all for being a part of it.]]> Sat, 16 Feb 2008 07:47:28 -0800 http://www.whiskerino.org/2007/ace/18393/ http://www.whiskerino.org/2007/ace/18318/

i have one tattoo although most wouldnt really consider it to be a real one. i have a single dot on the palm of my left hand. you cant really see it much as it has sunk into my skin a lot over time so i drew an arrow pointing to it. but im not gonna tell you about what it means or how or why i got it, so dont ask. but since most people dont consider it to really be a tattoo because of its small size, i got p-u-n-k on my right knuckles in temporary tattoos to make up for it. jchc for 6 years and going strong... and per gavins request yesterday, i took my photo inside of wal-mart today and now the trifecta is now complete. and not only did i take it inside the store, i also got the mcdonalds inside wal-wart in the background too. it was funny taking this photo because the greeter lady kept walking by try to see what i was doing. she probably thought i was trying to photograph top secret wal-mart prices... haha. all valentines stuff is 50% off today at wal-mart by the way for you candy lovers out there.]]> Fri, 15 Feb 2008 14:57:18 -0800 http://www.whiskerino.org/2007/ace/18318/ http://www.whiskerino.org/2007/ace/18118/

after much racking of my brain trying to pick a single musical artist or album, i decided rather to go with one whos music has shaped my life in a ways. this music would be that of pedro the lion, the moniker of which the frontman, one david bazan, previously led under. my first discovery of pedro the lion happened sometime in college in about 2001 or 2002. i think i heard something on a friends mix cd. but jade tree had just re-released It's Hard To Find A Friend (originally released when i was in high school in 98) and some of my friends had gotten into it. i heard the song "big trucks" for the first time, a song about big rig truckers and not flipping them off in your 87 trans am because they are going as fast as they can with an oversize load. and it made me laugh. but as i explored the album even more, i found a collection of songs that would awe inspiring to say the least. at this time in my life, i had just accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as my savior, but coming from a place where Christianity was not the norm and being raised in a non-christian home, everything was completely new and confusing to me, and a lot of stuff and people in the church did not make sense with the teaching of Jesus. one i was especially confused about was sin and hypocrisy in the church, which from what i had read in the Bible, should not have been there at all. struggling with my new found faith and lack of good leadership at the time, this album spoke to me and of many of these things, including interpersonal struggle with faith and belief ("Secret of the Easy Yoke", "The Longer I Lay Here") as well as making biblical stories in more relevant up to date songs ("Of Minor Prophets and their Prostitute Wives" is about the book of Hosea and "The Well" is about the woman at well discovering Jesus for the first time) all of which seemed so new and fresh to me. there was a certain unique honesty in his words, where you could tell that these songs werent just filler, but there was something behind them all, to the beautifully simple jangle of a chord or two. nothing too distracting. nothing too fancy. but amazing nonetheless. after exploring more of pedros music, i discovered the ep titled The Only Reason I Feel Secure (is that i am validated by my peers). a lovely ep that again brought about a person struggle of sorts to the listener, one that i had never heard before. with lyrics so poignant they were almost questioning of my own faith altogether. take the lyrics from "Letter From A Concerned Follower" which are so culturally sound in our times with its certain sarcasm, yet begs to ask to question in the most sincerest of forms whether God Himself and His relevance is something that people really believe in these days, as opposed to what with all of our scientific research and everything says: "Some folks think we're better now. Social evolutions new synthetic will will keep us on a straighter path, 'cause better men use brand new math with no wrong answers. I'm just a little bit worried. Do you have some sort of plan? Have you been finally defeated by the cunning of these fully evolved men? I hear that you don't change How do you expect to keep up with the trends? You won't survive the information age Unless you plan to change the truth To accomodate the brilliance of man The brilliance of man" a lot pedros the lions albums have themed stories attached to them as well, most being subjects that very few circles, Christians especially, wouldnt dare touch. The Whole EP is about a drug addicted man who finds life as nothing more than getting his next fix and th need never going away, but then finds that only the love of Christ can fill the hole that drugs have created and though he may fall again and again and struggle once more, He needs only to cling to Christ because he is all the strength that he needs. Winners Never Quit is the tale of two brothers, one who falls down the wrong path and one who follows the right path. the irony is that in the end the right path brother ends up being a murdering crooked politician who ruins the family name while the wrong path brother has a chance to seek the grace of God. the story played out with music and lyric is an amazing sight to behold once realized and here its story is told through so much emotion not only heard in voice, but in the guitar work as well. The Control album is one crazy tale of sex and infidelity with an unfaithful husband and a resentful wife who ends up murdering the husband at the end of the album. moving in its detail, you see sin from the point of view of all involved, not sugar coated or anything, taken exactly for what it is: a temptation that is hard to deny. again, humanity in all its ugly glory is on display here and it is beautifully moving. lyrics on this album are incredibly powerful as well. from the song "Magazine", for example: "Oh, look you earned your wings Are you an angel, now Or a vulture Constantly hovering over waiting for a big mistake Oh, my God, what have I done? Oh, my God, what have I done? Wouldn't you love to be On the cover of a magazine? Healthy skin, perfect teeth Designed to hide what lies beneath I feel the darkness growing stronger As you cram light down my throat How does that work out for you In your holy quest to be above reproach?" since becoming a fan, i have seen pedro the lion many times in concert and most recently, david bazan as well in his solo effort. david and i have also become good friends and he was actually in one of my whiskerino shots a while back in december in case you missed it. overall, pedro the lion's music made me question my own faith time and time again, which is probably one of the best things to keep me, and any person of faith really, in line with what they truly believe. because if your faith is not something that you are constantly testing and questioning, than i would wonder if you really have faith in anything at all. sorry this is so long, but i felt like i cant explain myself in a few words if i am to explain my favorite music. plus david bazan has a nice lookin beard and ive never seen him without a beard either. you never can go wrong when dudes got a beard.]]> Tue, 12 Feb 2008 09:19:18 -0800 http://www.whiskerino.org/2007/ace/17884/ http://www.whiskerino.org/2007/ace/17780/

Everyone meet Fritz. According to him, this is "his 4th beard ever grown" and he has "not cut or trimmed it since 1964". he also said hes "103 years young". i talked to him for a few minutes about beard growth and split ends in beards. although a nice fellow he was, the whole time i couldnt help but stare at the piece of cheese stuck in his beard. if you look at it larger, you can actually see it in his beard. i dont really have a favorite t-shirt, but this one i have probably had longer than any other one. its actually a shirt design i made about 5 or 6 years ago back in college that i had professionally done on a baseball tee because i didnt like any Christian t-shirt designs at the time because they were all super cheesy and i wanted to make my own. theres only about 4 or them in existence i think. anyways, you cant really tell from this photo, but its a statue of this angel leaning on a skull and theres a scripture underneath that says, "And they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. after still being asked time and time again about dumpster diving, some still dont really understand the logistics of it, so for you i have posted this photo that a friend took of me in a dumpster last night. although this probably isnt the best of ideas since im posting it online and it could be used against me as evidence, but if i go to jail for taking perfectly good food out of a dumpster, then so be it. but anyways, as you can see, its not that hard to dumpster dive. just get inside and get some stuff. all the produce you see here was already available in this box to be taken. nothing was wrong with any of it really, except for maybe a bruise or two, which makes it unsellable. a lot of times, its that simple. from the start of whiskerino, ive always wanted my photos to show what everyday life is like for me unscripted and not posed, minus theme days of course. but that included everything from dancing the night away to going to shows to dumpster diving and all that is in between. funny that i have become known as that guy that eats out of a dumpster. i was just trying to show you how i live is all. first dumpster dive of the new year! its a nice haul, but it could have been better had trader joes not put locks on their dumpsters!
